Far from the MaddingCrowd (2015)
 Romance/Drama
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) - the heroine of the story
  • Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts) - Bathsheba's true love.
  • William Boldwood (Michael Sheen) - Bathsheba's wealthy bachelor neighbor
  • Sergeant Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge) - the soldier who married Bathsheba
  • Fanny Robin (Juno Temple) - Sergeant Frank Troy's sweetheart
  • Liddy - Bathsheba’s assistant

Bathsheba works for her Aunt, in a farm in Dorset and met his new neighbor Gabriel Oak who has his own farm. Gabriel own hectares of land, over a hundred sheep and couple of sheep dogs he calls old George and young George. Gabriel, smitten by Bathsheba, asked for her hand in marriage but she declined. Bathsheba told Gabriel that she is ‘too independent’ and therefore does not require a husband.

Gabriel lost his farm after his dog young George went on a rampage and chased all the sheep to the cliff, they all jumped off and died. Having no savings left, he sold his farm. Bathsheba on the other hand, inherited his Uncle’s farm.  One night, Gabriel saw a farmhouse burning so he decided to help in putting out the fire. The next morning, Bathsheba arrived and he found that she’s the new owner of the farm that he just saved. She hired Gabriel to look after the sheep’s health and once admitted to Liddy she still like Gabriel.

Bathsheba and Libby went to a traders event to find clients for the seeds (from the farm) and immediately noticed a good looking man named William Boldwood, a bachelor and wealthy neighbor of hers. Bathsheba and Liddy sent Mr. Boldwood a valentine card as a joke not knowing he will take it seriously after the gentleman found what a hardworking and fine woman Bathsheba is. She did not deny the card was from her and apologized for the prank. Mr. Boldwood asked for Bathsheba’s hand in marriage . Gabriel talked to Bathsheba and told her how disappointed he was for what she did towards poor Mr. Boldwood and that everyone is talking about the prank she played. Bathsheba enraged by what Gabriel said, fired him and he left at once. The next day, Bathsheba came begging for Gabriel to come back after the sheep went bloated for eating some plant. Gabriel went back to the farm after Bathsheba personally asked for him to come back.

Mr. Boldwood, all crazy about Bathsheba, talked to Gabriel one day, looking unwell to express how embarrassed he was that the whole parish is already talking about him. He told Gabriel, Bathsheba did not promise him anything so nothing between them was ever broken as oppose to what the gossip mongers are thinking. Bathsheba, on the other hand threw a little thanksgiving party after Gabriel saved all his sheep, Mr. Boldwood turned up to celebrate with them. After the gathering, Mr. Boldwood offered to walk Bathsheba back to her house which the later declined and that same night he bumped into a soldier Sergeant Frank Troy who was lost in the woods. Sergeant Frank Troy told Bathsheba she was beautiful after the light from the lamp illuminated her face. The next day, she found the soldier working for the farm. Let me just fast forward, Bathsheba smitten by Frank decided to elope with him and secretly marries him despite Gabriel’s warning. Frank is an irresponsible man who gambled Bathsheba’s farm money away.

Franks story: On the day of his wedding, Frank waited for his sweetheart Fanny but she did not show up. Fanny, all ready for the wedding went to the wrong church which left Frank heartbroken. He was under the impression Fanny might’ve changed her mind and decided not to marry him. Frank never loved Bathsheba because his heart belongs only to Fanny.

One day, Bathsheba and Frank went to town and whilst busy betting during one of his gambling spree, Frank saw Fanny who’s now a beggar. Frank promised to meet her somewhere and to start a life anew after he learned that she’s carrying his child. Fanny, despite being feeble because of her pregnancy, went to their meeting place. Unfortunately she died waiting for Frank and her body collected by those who knew her. That night, Frank asked money from Bathsheba which she refused because the farm is on the verge of insolvency after he squandered all the farm money away due to gambling. He left empty handed and went to  their meeting place, Fanny was again a no show. On the other hand, Fanny’s casket was brought into the farm because she used to work for Bathsheba’s uncle. Bathsheba had a gut feeling Fanny is the same girl Frank told her about, she also found out that Fanny is pregnant and was shocked after she opened Fanny’s casket, she saw that Fanny is indeed pregnant and now lie dead with her unborn child. Frank saw her beloved Fanny and told  Bathsheba she was nothing to him. Bathsheba was devastated. Frank, decided to drown himself distraught after Fanny’s death. Bathsheba received the news, Frank died due to drowning.  Mr. Boldwood, took advantage of the situation and offered Bathsheba marriage for the second time. Bathsheba is torn because the farm is wallowing in debt and Mr. Boldwood offered to pay off all her debts if she marries him.

Mr. Boldwood decided to throw a party and talked to Gabriel beforehand. He told Gabriel how grateful he is for being such a perfect gentleman and that, he knew all along that Gabriel has special feelings for Bathsheba yet never took advantage of her. On the night of the gathering, Frank, alive and well suddenly turned up and started dragging Bathsheba (on her way home after walking out from Gabriel. She asked for his advise whether or not to accept Mr. Boldwood’s marriage proposal and Gabriel said to do what’s best which disappointed her). Mr. Boldwood shot Frank and instantly killed him. Fast forward again,  Gabriel is already saying goodbye to Bathsheba for good. She started crying and told Gabriel that she was his first sweetheart and he should try asking her what he asked her before because she might respond differently this time. Too make the long story short, it was finally a happy ending for Gabriel and Bathsheba after a long and winding road lol.

Far from the Madding Crowd is by far one of the best romance movies I’ve seen. It was a movie adaptation from an 1874 Thomas Hardy novel and the first movie version was back in 1967. I’ve read from reviews, Far from the Madding Crowd is one of the best romance movies around so I was curious to watch it but I got the 1967 copy. I wondered at first if it was the same movie people are raving about. I looked further and found there was another movie adaptation which stars Tom Sturridge (who’s now turning to be one of my fave actors) last 2015 so I watched it and yes it was indeed a worth watching flick. I will definitely be adding this movie to my best romance movies of all the time list.

Effi Gray (2014)
Romance/Drama
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • John Ruskin (Greg Wise), Victorian art critic
  • Euphemia "Effie" Gray (Dakota Fanning), John’s wife
  • John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge), Pre-Raphaelite artist
  • Elizabeth Eastlake (Emma Thompson), wife of Sir Charles Eastlake, Director of the National Gallery.

Effie Gray is an interesting 18th century love triangle about a young woman and two famous artists. John Ruskin is a family friend to Euphemia "Effie” Gray. The house (in Scotland) where Effie’s family live belongs to John’s grandfather who committed suicide. When Effie was twelve, John wrote a fantasy novel for her called  The King of the Golden River. John married Effie when she was 19 whilst he was 29 years old. After the marriage, Effie met John’s parents in England whom she found very uptight to the point of being control freaks. They attribute John’s success to them, they rave about how well they brought him up. They weren’t so fond of Effie neither (especially John’s mother) because her family has a lot of debt. John is a known Victorian art critic from an affluent family.

During their honeymoon, Effie stripped in front of John which made the later walk out. Effie was offended and cried the whole night thinking she’s not sexually attractive to her husband. He never touched nor made love to Effie all through out their married life and. John even told poor Effie that he despised her body and must wait until she’s 25, he never wanted to have a child with her neither. John described Effie as boring and not passionate. He was also oppressive to Effie, he often insults and verbally berates her. Effie felt totally alone during her marriage to John. She was stressed out thus started losing her hair and turned frail.  Effie on the other hand met Elizabeth Eastlake, wife of Sir Charles Eastlake, she was amused with Effie’s wit. Elizabeth and Effie became good friends.

John wanted a portrait for himself thus decided to commission Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais. John, along with Effie and Everett went to Scotland to have his portrait painted and second for Effie’s health to get better. Everett’s admiration for John’s artistic talent turned into disappointment and disgust after he saw how John treats his wife in front of him. John often embarrass Effie in his presence and she just shrugs it off. Everett and Effie fell in love and before they head back to England, the two already has suspicions that John might be already aware with what’s going on between them. Effie also made an agreement with Everett which was not revealed until the movie ended.

Effie, unable to endure John’s attitude towards her asked for an advise from her good friend Elizabeth Eastlake. Effie told Elizabeth that there was never any sexual contact between her and her husband and that she’s still a virgin to Elizabeth’s surprise. Elizabeth seek help from friends as well and instructed Effie to go to a doctor (Ob-gyne) which she did. The doctor confirmed that Effie is indeed a virgin and is willing to put it writing. Elizabeth helped Effie to get a legal counsel.  The lawyer told Effie upon reading the result from the doctor that, she could file for an annulment on the grounds of impotence. A letter then was sent to the Ruskins and they were aghast. Effie, on the other hand, sent Everett a message through her sister. She told Everett to wait once everything is already ironed out.

Effie Gray is a biographical movie and I find true stories really interesting. Ok, it was a little boring because the setting was during the 18th century but as you watch along, you will find yourself glued to it hoping for Effie’s damsel in distress situation to get better. Nevertheless, it’s one of those movies I have not seen before because the plot isn’t something mediocre. I admire that Effie did not resort to drastic actions despite her husband’s hostility. She did not go on rogue and started sleeping with other men given the situation and instead kept mum about it until it was too much for her to bear. It’s not about being resilient, it’s about doing the right thing. After watching the movie, I did a little research and found that Effie eventually married Everett and had eight children. It was indeed a happy ever after for Effie.

Crimson Peak (2015)
Horror
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska)
  • Carter Cushing (Jim Beaver)- a weathy businessn man, Edit’s father
  • Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) - English baronet, became Edith’s husband
  • Lucille (Jessica Chastain)  - Sir Thomas Sharpe’s ‘sister’
  • Dr. Alan McMichael (Charlie Hunnam) - Edith’s childhood friend, close to her father

Edith awoke one night after hearing a strange noise outside her room. When she looked at the direction where the noise was from, she saw a strange black figure headed towards her. Her ghost mother then whispered "beware of Crimson Peak.”

Years later, Edith is now grown and a budding writing. Her father, Carter Cushing loves her dearly, Edith often preps her father up for social events. One day, an English man named Sir Thomas Sharpe seek help from Mr. Cushing, he needs someone to finance his ‘red bricks’ which Mr. Cushing declined because he didn’t like ‘something’ about him. Thomas though has expressed interest in Edith from the very beginning. Edith, on the other hand also expressed mutual feeling towards Thomas. Dr. Alan McMichael, Edith’s friend since childhood do not like Mr. Sharpe neither.

Mr. Cushing hired a detective to investigate  Thomas and his ‘sister’ Lucille and found unpleasant facts about them. He found that Thomas’ name is being linked to a murder. He then talked to Lucille and Thomas, offered the later huge money to stay away from Edith and leave for good. Days later, Mr. Cushing was found brutally murdered in the bathroom, his skull cracked after it was smashed in the sink. Edith was devastated but no lead as to who killed him. Dr. Alan McMichael found Mr. Cushing’s death peculiar.

Thomas told Edith he’s leaving for good and divulged that her father offered him huge sums of money. Edith, decided to marryThomas and they moved to England to live in his dilapidated oversized house/mansion with Lucille. Thomas is barely seen in the mansion during the day as he’s too busy with a 'red brick’ machine. In his absence, Edith spent a lot of time wandering in the big house until she started to get sick and began seeing a scary ghost of a woman which seems to be warning her about something. Despite being sick, Edith found time rummaging through Thomas’ stuff and found voice recording of a woman. The unknown woman said she’s being poisoned and that Thomas only married her because of her money. Edith found that the woman died along with her child. Petrified, Edith started suspecting that she’s being poisoned by Lucille thus explains why she’s always sick, she also learned that Thomas’ mansion is called the Crimson Peak, she then recalls her mother’s warning.

One night, Edith found the most shocking thing, she saw Thomas and Lucille making love. Edith found that Thomas and Lucille aren’t siblings but husband and wife. Edith attempted to escape but was too frail to do so. Dr. Alan McMichael learned that Edith is in the process of transferring all her estate in England, decided to visit the later because he’s got a gut feeling that she might be in grave danger. True enough, she found that Edith is indeed being poisoned so he asked permission from Thomas to take her to the hospital. Things has gotten of hand afterwards, Thomas took Edith’s side, unable to endure anymore of Lucille’s evil doings. Thomas stabbed Dr. Alan McMichael but made sure he will not die, he killed Lucille after the later made an attempt to kill Edith. Lucille killed Thomas but she died as well. Dr. Alan McMichael and Edith escaped from the mansion despite the heavy snow and I presume they survived.

Crimson Peak is one of the most thrilling gothic romance films I’ve seen to date, a must see.

All Good Things (2010)
Psychological Thriller
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • David Marks/Robert Durst (Ryan Gosling)
  • Katie McCarthy/Kathleen McCormack (Kirsten Dunst)
  • Sanford Marks/Seymour Durst (Frank Langella)
  • Deborah Lehrman/Susan Berman (Lily Rabe)

All Good Things again, is based on a true story about an unresolved murder. See Robert Durst to know more about the actual story.

David, son of a rich business tycoon from New York (Sanford Marks) marries Katie McCarthy after having known her for quite a while. Katie is a regular working student who has plans of becoming a Doctor someday. David and Katie went off to Vermont from NYC to start their life together. David put up a business called All Good Things which coined the movie title. One day, David’s father paid the couple a visit to persuade him to take part in the family business. David, no matter how he promised himself to never work for his father decided to go back to NY, he accepted his father’s offer. David was assigned to collect payments for couple of their apartment complex, Avon and Luxor. He became so engrossed with the family business after he started earning huge amount of money. David rented an apartment unit in Manhattan and also bought a lake house outside the city for him and Katie.

Just a little story about David. His mother jumped off the building/committed suicide right in front of him when he was still a child and the incident created a psychological damage/trauma in David. Despite his psychiatric treatments, he remained having psychotic tendencies. Katie is not aware what David has gone through as a child hadn’t Deborah, David’s close friend told her. Katie told David that she wants to have a baby, David refused which left Katie distraught. David’s violent behavior started manifesting after learning that Katie started Medical school without telling him. One time, she pulled Katie’s hair and violently dragged her so she come home with him, another time he had her black and blue just to name a few. The worst one was when he killed his own dog.

One rainy night, Katie went home to the lake house to see how David is going and also for a little talk. She noticed that David's dog is missing so she curiously asked him and was told 'the dog is in the kennel.' When Katie checked, she found out that David killed the poor animal. Few days later, Katie is nowhere to be found and was declared a ‘missing person’ and she still do even up to now. Some of the people working for the Durst’s recalls having seen Katie days after David claimed she’s missing. It was revealed during the later part in the movie that, David’s father saw Katie’s body in David's car (the trunk) yet never said a word. According to the movie, David might’ve thrown Katie’s body in a lake. It was also revealed that Deborah became his accomplice, she disguised as Katie. The body was never found so David never went to jail neither.

Many years later, David lived a life of a recluse and disguised as a woman because he no longer wants attention from the public. He lived in an apartment and befriended his landlord. On the other hand, Deborah got into a terrible accident and would like more money from David thus threatened to tell the authorities ‘everything’ if David will not help him. I found out that David financially sustained Deborah all through the years since after what happened to Katie. Moving on, David’s landlord is being evicted from his property so he promised to provide a home for him since he’s looking to purchase a new house only under one condition, he needs to kill Deborah. So, the old man did. David then killed his landlord to cover up the crime I guess. David claimed it was ‘self-defense’ which the court believed, he was just penalized for ‘improper disposal of a body.’

All Good Things is a must watch especially to those who love psychological thrillers like I do. David exemplified one best attribute of a psycho killer, he’s too smart for his own good. He might’ve orchestrated a ‘perfect crime’ but maybe, in the long run, justice will still prevail somehow.

The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
Drama/Crime Movie
⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • Luke Glanton (Ryan Gosling) - popular motorcycle stuntman in New York back during the late 90’s.
  • Romina Gutierrez (Eva Mendes) - Luke’s old fling with whom she had a child
  • Robin (Ben Mendelsohn) - became Luke’s friend and partner in crime
  • Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper) - the police officer who gunned down Luke
  • Jason Kancam (Dane DeHaan) - Luke’s son
  • A.J. Cross (Emory Cohen) - Avery’s son
Luke learned that she got her old fling Romina pregnant after a year and met his baby boy for the first time. Romina never told Luke about the baby because she thought what happened between them was nothing serious. Luke found about his son through Romina’s mother. He offered child support, left his job and promised Romina to start their life together which the she refused because he’s now living in with Kofi. Luke determined to start his life anew with Romina and his baby boy became friends with Robin (who offered him a job to be a mechanic at first). Robin told Luke he’s going to make a great bank robber because he’s an excellent motorcycle driver (yes he drives really fast). Luke, righteous at first eventually gave in to Robin’s offer because he’s in dire need of money to support his child and Romina. Robin and Luke became great partners in crime until Robin said they’ve done enough, Luke refused to stop robbing banks until he got caught. After a police chase, a police officer named Avery Cross cornered him when he hid inside one of the houses. Avery accidentally fired his gun first and shot Luke in the stomach. Luke fired back and shot Avery in the leg yet he died and fell off the window. Avery, on the other hand was awarded for his ‘heroic act.’ Avery felt totally guilty for what happened especially after he learned that he left someone’s child fatherless. Avery’s boss have a gut feeling though that the later might’ve done ‘something wrong’ so he wanted Avery to be the first to say that he shot Luke first which was contrary to what really happened. In Avery’s case, as far as I know, he handled the situation wrong because he fired first which caused Luke’s death. It cannot fall under 'self-defense' because there was no threat in the first place. Luke’s instinct was to fire back because he was shot first. I think it could’ve been a ground for dismissal yet it turned out to be the other way around.

Moving on, Avery demanded for promotion because he’s a degree holder. However, his boss declined and advised he should work his way up. Avery saw the rampant corruption in police force so he collated evidence to expose those involved including his friends. His one last demand was for his boss to promote him to 'district attorney' since he’s technically a lawyer, he has a law degree and of course passed the bar. He sort of black mailed his boss so his demand was granted thus he became even more famous for what he did.

After 15 years, Avery is now busy running for public office. Avery is now divorced with his wife and has a teenage son A.J. who’s into drugs. His wife asked him to help his son before he gets totally out of control which he did. Then, out of coincidence became friends with Jason Kancam (Luke’s son). A.J. and Jason got caught after buying drugs from a drug dealer. Avery, totally angered by what happened told his son to ‘stay away’ from Jason yet A.J. he never did. Jason learned that his father was killed by the then police officer Avery who happened to be A.J’s Dad after he spoke with Robin, his father’s friend. Jason by the way asked Kofi for his biological father name which the later disclosed so he researched online and that’s how he found Robin. Jason learned that his father was great motorcycle stuntman as per Robin and that his motorcycle might’ve been turned over to the authorities.

Jason made a plan, he thought of killing Avery to avenge his father.  He barged in to Avery’s home and found A.J. however, Avery went home so Jason saw him and took him to the forest (or what i call the place beyond pines). He asked for Avery’s wallet and is already 'decided ‘ to kill him until Avery begged on his knees and uttered i’m sorry Jason as he weeps. Jason then realized Avery knew who he was all along so he took off with his wallet and wads of cash. Jason saw his family picture in Avery's wallet, with his parents, Luke and Romina, and himself when he was still a little boy. Jason used the cash to purchase his father’s old motorcycle. the end.

It was a lengthy yet a wonderful movie. Watching The Place Beyond the Pines felt as if reading couple of chapters from a book, the first chapter was Luke’s whilst the second, was Avery’s. The movie is about having a good purpose in life yet opt to do evil along the way in order to achieve it. Luke’s purpose was totally right hats down (which was to give his family a good future) but, he resorted to do unlawful things which later on caused his life so in the end he still was not able to give his son a good life.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - highly recommended
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  - somewhat highly recommended

Dream Away

I Finally finished my third DIY dream catcher today which I started making few days ago. For some reason, I found it quite easier to make compared to round dream catchers. I made it from scraps as usual. I used some BBQ sticks, cotton yarn, feathers, beads and jute twines. The yarn was a little tedious to weave though because of the triangular hoop. My only concern, I hope my cat will not tear this new dream catcher apart when it gets bored because this one is quite fragile since it's made from BBQ sticks. It was quite fun to make although it does not serve its real purpose as it's supposed to be placed on top of the bed. Yeah whatever, I'll always be fond of dream catchers. ❤

Musings, Etc.

The country is Ã¼ber busy because of the ongoing Presidential election and I myself is very squeamish to know who would be our new President. I’ve been glued to Twitter since yesterday as it’s faster versus waiting for poll results on TV. It may be premature to say since the counting of results isn’t over yet but it seems it’ll be an obvious landslide feat in favor of Rody Duterte.

The VP race is quite interesting though because it’s becoming a pretty tough fight between my bet, Leni Robredo and Bong Bong Marcos. I’ve been praying since yesterday for a leader who’s capable of leading the nation to a better path wins. Someone who believes that violation of human rights is NOT a 'just' way for the citizens to respect the law. I so hate tyranny. We elect our leaders because we have faith in them and not because we expect them to become super humans. Let's not forget as well that, as citizens of this country it is also our basic responsibility to obey the law. It's not even an option anyways. Our leaders cannot do it alone.

I may not have a 100% bet as far as who the next President would be, but, I think the reason why Duterte is leading it's because we are tired of our country being in a state of disarray and the man is known for having no mercy towards criminals. This nation lacks organization because everybody wants to have things their way. We are still hoping for someone who would be capable of putting things in perspective because we are so damn tired of the worsening crime rate, snarling traffic jams, corruption in the government and people who are forever wallowing in poverty. So, whatever the outcome of the election is, I will respect it because it’s quite obvious, the partial results says it all, the nation is so yearning for change.

Moving on, reading the news can be quite stressful due to the vote buying thing, malfunctioning of Vote Counting Machines (VCM) and cheating issues. So, I converted those negative energy to positive instead through crafting and ended up up-cycling some of our half pint jars (which used to be cake jars) to useful glass containers and put vintage labels on them. This way, I have prevented them from going to trash bins.

Little Hanoi Diamond Hotel: A Review

27th April '16

Little Hanoi Diamond Hotel
11 Bat Dan, Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi
Hotel lobby..

We arrived at the Little Hanoi Diamond hotel past 2:00 in the morning and it was closed so the driver made a phone call to someone who works at the hotel to open the roll up. It was warm inside and the staff may have been resting during our time of arrival so it was pretty desolate inside. The Bat Dan area is right in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter where you will find tons of food stalls, hotels, spas and what-have-you, a lot of motorcycles and cabs as well.
view from the balcony; lots of places
to chow just across our hotel...

Front Desk
The friendly guy at the reception warmly welcomed us although we didn’t catch his name because it was pretty difficult for us to understand him due to the whole language barrier thing. He kindly asked for our passports and told us we can get them back the next day which possibly means upon departure since we'll be leaving on the eve of the 28th. We were still a bit confused with the time difference when we arrived in Vietnam because we left Manila around 10:30 PM night of the 26th and we arrived in Hanoi morning of the 27th which was already our birthday plus Vietnam is an hour behind us. We both felt a little iffy leaving our passports to the hotel because we haven't done that before and none of the hotels we stayed at abroad ever asked for our passports (for safe keeping or whatever) except upon arrival, they just scan it and they return it back. I guess that's a way for them to ensure their guests will not run off not settling the bill. It was just a little uncomfortable that's all.

Tour
So, while talking to the front desk, we asked if we could customize our tour for later this morning. We told him we’d like to visit certain attractions and showed him the print out of our itinerary and at the same time inquired how much it would cost to rent a vehicle which would take us around the city. He said he can arrange a cab for us for $15 because other means of transportation for tourists would be more pricey. We also asked how much would a 'customized tour' cost but he didn't really confirm anything so nothing was ever clear in the end. We just assumed everything is just really walking distance. Vietnamese people speak fast plus the local twang so it’s quite difficult to understand them so you really have to listen.

My sister and I booked an All day tour for tomorrow, the 28th called Bai Dinh Pagoda - Trang An Eco Tourism Tour for $35 per head. He said we have to approach or remind him again in the morning so he could book it because their system won’t allow him to book it anymore which we agreed  since we’re already tired from our flight and all we want is just to lay down and unpack our stuff as its early morning already. We were then ushered in to our hotel room on the 3rd floor. Surprisingly, the hotel do not have elevators so we had to walk all the way up to the 3rd floor no matter how exhausted we were geez.

The hotel have this Spanish or French feel to it. I don’t know if they have air-conditioning outside the rooms because it was warm in the entire building as we walk up towards our room. At long last we finally stepped inside our hotel room! All I wanted the whole time was to have a quick shower and drink cold water. Well, the shower part isn’t a good idea because my body just endured an exhausting flight so I just chugged cold water and had some mango tarts we bought from NAIA back home to combat my hunger.

Deluxe Double/Twin
full size fridge, closet and flat screen TV..
Our room was spacious and cozy with three twin beds (I think). It has this huge wooden closet, a chandelier and a balcony which overlooks Bat Dan Street. The air-condition in our room quickly switched from warm to cold in no time which was good because we’re so yearning for a colder temperature since we arrived in Hanoi. We fired up our computers and accessed the internet as soon as we're settled in.

Globe Prepaid Roaming Service
I enjoyed Globe’s roaming service the whole time I was in Vietnam by the way. It worked as if I’m back home. I learned that, if you’re looking to use Globe's roaming service, it’s still best to personally speak with someone/call Globe to have it activated  for you because the SMS roaming activation request isn’t really reliable experience wise because it did not work when I left for Hong Kong last year.

Toilet & Bath..
Room Amenities
Going back, our hotel room is pretty fine except for the broken closet door  and we weren’t able to use the other side of the closet since we can’t open it. The room isn’t equipped with tea pot neither which I was quite disappointed with, I can’t survive in a hotel room without a tea pot. I also noticed the limited number of toiletries. There’s only 1 small tube of shower gel and shampoo then 1 small pack of soap for the two of us. The toothbrush was of really poor quality and the toothpaste was awful. Good thing I hoarded some of the free toiletries (2 soaps, 1 shampoo & conditioner, 1 toothpaste) provided for by The Wings Transit Lounge back home when I stayed there and I was able to use them for myself the whole time I was at the The Little Hanoi Diamond Hotel. My sister and I are not finicky travellers but at least we could care for some pretty decent toiletries and of course a tea pot, almost all hotels nowadays provide that. The heater wasn't user friendly or possibly broken because there were instances when the water will just turn too steamy to the point it has almost scald me.

Majority of the hotel staff were very friendly as well (they even surprised us with a birthday cake and a happy birthday song on the day of our birthday). The only exception was this one guy named Dave who wasn’t very helpful. One time my sister and I asked for help to have our boarding passes printed since we just checked in online the night of the 27th. Their desktop computer is in Vietnamese so we had a hard time figuring out how to print our boarding pass from the same computer. We asked for Dave’s help and he said he doesn’t know how neither. Dave said we have to email it to him and he’ll print it from the front desk’s printer. The page is secured so I am unable to copy and paste it to a word document nor save a copy so I could send it as an email attachment. My sister and I were already both tired and pissed off because there seemed to be no solution hadn’t I asked Dave if I could use the front desk’s computer and directly print our boarding passes from their printer. I asked him how do I print it since the language is also in Vietnamese. Again, Dave said ‘I don’t know.’ I mean wtf?? So, what do you know? He was all friendly and helpful to the caucasian guests but he wasn’t the whole time he was dealing with us which made us think if he’s being a racists or what. So, I tried to right-click the page that I’m viewing and asked him if there’s anything that says ‘PRINT’ since I cannot understand a thing, it worked and Mr. oh so helpful guy finally printed our friggin’ boarding passes. It was such an ordeal really. I hope they have IT people they could call in the event their staff isn’t very versed with computers to save everyone time or better yet change the computer language to ‘english’ and install a printer right next to their computers for their guests’ convenience. That wouldn’t hurt, would that?

Breakfast Bar & Dining Area
The breakfast bar offered very limited items to choose from and the dining hall is a little cramped up making it difficult for everyone to hover. The food items during our stay were limited to mostly fruits cold cuts, bread and some baked items. No cold drinks neither, only hot coffee and tea.

across is the Quoc Hoa Hanoi Hotel also in Bat Dan
My overall stay at the Little Hanoi Diamond Hotel was a 5/10. I think the hotel may need a ‘facelift’ to improve their guest rooms and facilities. They may need to find another supplier for their toiletries as well because theirs were seriously awful. I am saying this because the toiletries they provided was one of worst in my experience with my years of travel and stay at various hotels in my own country and abroad. I am also hoping they’ll have a bigger dining hall someday and better breakfast items to choose from. I hope they also improve the air-conditioning down at the lobby because it's really warm the moment you step inside the hotel.

Good morning Hanoi!
In fairness to Little Hanoi Diamond though, they have daily housekeeping and your stuff is safe inside your room. My sister and I left our Macbook in our hotel room the whole day and it was safe and sound the moment we came back. Safety is definitely out of the question although I'm still hoping they add some in-room safe on each and every room to give their guests peace of mind. I kept my Macbook by the way inside my backpack the whole time and padlocked it just to be on the safe side.

As an end note, I will still recommend Little Hanoi Diamond for short stays and to non-finicky travellers because they don’t offer much but a place to sleep for your tired body and mind after a long day. I’m also hoping they equip their hotel rooms with coffee/tea pot at least as it’s a very basic hotel room amenity.

So here's my evaluation for Little Hanoi Diamond Hotel.

Good Points:
  • Spacious room
  • equipped with 2 coffee cups
  • room with a view from the balcony (subject to availability/upon request)
  • a/c perfectly working
  • TV with english cable channels
  • Full sized fridge
  • Daily Housekeeping
  • fresh towels & toiletries everyday

Must Improve:
  • Limited breakfast items
  • Heater
  • very few toiletries for number of guests
  • No in-room safe
  • lobby needs better air-conditioning
  • Bigger dining hall
  • No elevators/walk up building

Boats and Pagodas of Bai Dihn and Ninh Binh

Day 02
28th April '16

Bai Dinh Pagoda & Trang An Eco Tourism Tour
($35/person 7:40 A.M – 6:30 P.M)

Yesterday’s city tour was quite exhausting and we slept pretty late last night because we were so stumped editing all the pictures we took during our DIY city tour so we’re not sure if we’re really prepared for today’s itinerary.

8:00 AM - Front desk rang us up to remind us about the tour. Good thing we’re all ready to go and about to head downstairs. We just devoured what’s left with our birthday cake for breakfast lol. Whilst waiting for our tour guide, I spoke with the front desk to settle our bill ahead of time since we’re checking out later tonight or let’s just say I really wanted to get my passport because front desk took it for safekeeping or should I say it’s their way to ensure that their guests will not run off without paying their dues. Ok, so the guy at the front desk named Dave is been giving me and my sister a hard time since yesterday because he speaks english but do not comprehend that much so it was really difficult talking to him due to the whole language barrier thing. I asked him if it’s ok I settle the whole bill now, he responded to just pay the whole thing upon check out so I instead asked how much the total would be so at least I have an idea. He computed my bill and told me how much. I asked him again, ’so, I’ll just pay this later right?” Dave answered “No, you pay it now.” At the back of my mind I was all confused if we’re understanding each other or what although  I suspect he really doesn’t so to make the long story short I paid the entire bill including the tour, airport drop off and all then asked for my receipt just in case. I paid everything in US dollars so he asked if it’s ok for my change to be part USD and part VND, I told him I prefer all USD because I won’t be able to convert the VNDs when I get back to my country. He then said ‘I do not understand.’ I’m a nice person really, if he just told me from the beginning he couldn’t understand me our conversation could’ve run smoothly. So I dropped my accent and started talking really slow because I really do not want to give him a hard time, I just said ‘yeah, it’s ok if you give me some US dollars and the rest in VND.’ All was well afterwards although I seriously think he's being sarcastic the whole time.

Few minutes after 8AM - our tour van finally arrived yay! It was a Ford Expedition with a 16 person seating capacity. I didn’t even catch our tour guide’s name and again my sister and I had a hard time understanding him because vietnamese people when they speak in english you’ll hear a lot of Z’s and no R’s. The tour came with free lunch and free bottled water.

Our tour guide showed us today’s itinerary through his iPad. He said, instead of going to Bai Dinh Pagoda, we’ll go to Trang An first because there won’t be enough time if we go to the Pagoda first which we didn’t have any problem with. I mean he should know he’s been a tour guide for quite a while I bet. Our group consist of 6 people: my sister and I of course, an asian couple (the guy is Vietnamese whilst his girlfriend is Japanese), one 78 year old Australian guy and the last addition to our group, a Greek guy we fetched from this hotel already somewhere close to Trang An.

The Trang An Eco Tourism Complex is about two hours away from Hanoi (Ninh Binh province) and yeah it was really far to think we didn’t even eat enough food for breakfast oh my God. Our tour guide wasn’t so talkative which was alright because if you talk too much on a two hour drive you’ll exhaust you vocal chords big time. My sister and I just listened to my iPod because there’s no music in the van the whole time. We Filipinos are music lovers and it’s pretty tough for us to endure long trips not listening to anything or it’ll bore the hell out of us.

10:00 AM - We finally reached Trang An. We asked our tour guide for loo time because most of us really have to pee and we were told that the boat ride would take two hours so it’s a must to use the restroom now. We paid 2k VND for using the restroom btw, they also charge which is kinda like back home. Our tour guide suggested that we buy some hat to protect our head from the heat of the sun and it gets pretty windy at times as well so, we bought ourselves this cute green hat for $1 a piece. Of course my sister and I bought identical hats lol. Afterwards, we were handed our tour cards which looked like an MRT card then our boat tour officially commenced as soon as we all on board. Our boat only had 5 passengers in total. My sister and I, the Aussie and the Greek guy plus the Vietnamese woman who will row the boat for us.

We went boating for two hours and along the way, weird thoughts kept crossing my mind such as what if an Anaconda  or a crocodile sprout from nowhere? I guess we’re all doomed lol. Our tour guide confirmed later on though that there's no crocs in the Trang An lake.

I enjoyed this part of the tour because my sister and I are both nature lovers and it felt so serene out in the lake. The most exciting part was when our boats entered the many caves, it was pretty cool although on a serious note could lead to casualty if one of the passengers failed to duck whilst inside the cave. Nevertheless, everyone finished the tour unharmed. Our tour mates even helped to row our boat, they're big guys anyways. Although, seriously, it's not easy to row a boat for roughly two straight hours.

We entered numerous cave chains: Sang Cave, Toi Cave, Ba Giot Cave, Sinh Cave etc. We also had a good view of Ha Long Bay in land during our tour.

Buddha Sanctuary place of Bai
 Dinh Pagoda.

Around 12:30 NN - After Trang An, We had our lunch first at this restaurant with free wifi access somewhere close to Bai Dinh. A table is already set for all of us when we got there which means we all have to share the same table except for our tour guide and the driver because they have their own. It felt really awkward because my sister and I are both not comfortable sharing a table with other people because we never do that even back home. That was the time we told ourselves we could’ve opted for a private tour. It was a sumptuous meal though, they served goat meat, tofu, vegetables, soup etc. We were both uncomfortable though the whole time were having lunch because we’re dining with people we just met not that we don’t like them, we’re just not social beings that’s all.

1:30 PM - After having lunch, we headed straight to the Buddha Sanctuary place of Bai Dinh Pagoda. The tuk-tuk took us to the massive Bai Dinh Pagoda gate which cost $3 or 60k VND per person.

The Buddha Sanctuary place of Bai Dinh Pagoda is the biggest one in Vietnam with 500 Arhan statues according to our tour guide. The Sanctuary have 10,000 buddhas excluding the massive ones. The first temple we went to housed the Buddha guards then we visited about five more temples afterwards which all housed even more humongous Buddhas. They were all picturesque. I love temples and massive Buddhas, they never cease to amaze me. We finished taking pictures with all the Buddhas so we decided to go back to the main gate on our own which was a bad idea because we had trouble finding the main gate and we were extremely late when we catch up with the rest of our group and yeah it was really embarrassing. We shouldn’t have gone astray. The result, our tour guide was a little ticked as soon as he found us which was understandable because we sort of hassled everyone
lol. Lesson learned - never leave your group if you’re out on a tour. We seriously didn't know what to do back then because the Sanctuary was huge and we don’t have any contact number for any of our tour mates nor our tour guide. Our guardian angel must’ve saved us again thank God. We finally left Bai Dinh around 4:30 PM which was supposedly at 4:00 PM my oh my! Afterwards, we endured another two hour trip back to Hanoi and my iPod’s battery was totally drained out.

Banh Mi
7:00 PM
Back to the Old Quarter. Our tour van dropped us off close to our hotel. We immediately settled in to prep up for our flight later. Gadh, we’re so famished and exhausted. We just dropped off our stuff in our hotel room then looked for a place to eat preferably somewhere close to our hotel in Bat Dan. Good thing, we found this food  stall across which sells Egg coffee and Banh Mi (and it’s not so packed). So we ordered Banh Mi and egg coffee right away and immediately chow down. We’re so pressed for time so we weren’t able to eat out a lot and sadly we weren’t able to try other Vietnamese food other than Pho Ga and their coffee. We enjoyed the egg coffee by the way because it was more of a dessert than a coffee according to my taste buds. Banh Mi was also tasteful, it was Bagel with veggies, meat and chillies. If ever I’ll go back to Hanoi again I’ll make sure to try their spring rolls first and very minimal tour next time since we already did that during our two day stay.
the really good egg coffee..

8:00 PM - We went back to our hotel room, took a bath because the heat at the temples was a killer, packed our stuff and checked out minutes before 10:00 PM, took our passports and bid the hotel staff adieu as soon as our airport shuttle arrived at the hotel.

No Bai International Airport
Cab to No Bai International Airport

The cab driver barely speaks english as expected so we made sure we’re clear with which airport he’s supposed to take us because there’s no time for mistakes as our flight is in less than 3 hours.

On our way to the airport we had the chance to listen to Vietnamese FM radio and we noticed the melodic/ballad songs dominating their airwaves. The songs kind of made us even more sleepy although they were melodic except we can't understand a thing as usual. We barely slept in Hanoi due to time constraints and we promised to ourselves to never do that again. We should’ve stayed minimum of 3 days and maximum of five. Anyways, we had a great time in Vietnam and hopefully we get the chance to visit Ho Chi Minh (southern part of Vietnam) as well in the future!

1:15 AM (29th of April)
Flight back to Manila.
As soon as we're at the Noi Bai International Airport, we immediately looked for Cebu Pacific's web check-in counter. I was just surprised they don't have separate counters for web check-in as oppose to back home. Web check-in in is so hassle-free because they don't weigh your bags anymore. The queue to Immigration was pretty lengthy and disorganized all the way through final security check. My sister consumed all of our vietnamese dongs because we won't be able to use them anymore when we get home. I have seven bucks left and I sure am excited to go back home. Au Revoir Hanoi ’til we meet again!

Please check out this little video I made regarding our Hanoi adventure! Enjoy 😀

Hanoi Old Quarter City Stroll

DAY 01
27th April '16

View of the Old Quarter in the morning from our hotel room...
My sister and I woke up around 8:00 AM to grab breakfast at the hotel’s breakfast bar downstairs and thank God we still managed to sleep even if we arrived pretty late technically this morning. The noise from the busy street downstairs woke us up which we didn’t mind because our hotel room is dimly lighted and you won’t know it’s already morning hadn’t for the noise. My sister and I headed downstairs to have breakfast and it was a little awkward because we were the only people there at first and the rest were hotel staff. The dining area is quite small and the breakfast option is quite limited to mostly fruits and some baked potatoes. I suit myself with few slices of Dragon fruit, watermelon, this sweet tasting mantao, and some baked potatoes. The plate was quite small so I did not get anything else. My sister also noticed the same, the limited breakfast option. I asked her to get us some brewed coffee and we settled to our seats.

Whilst almost halfway through my plate, the hotel staff started singing ‘Happy Birthday’ with matching cake and candles. Baffled, my sister and I started looking around to see who’s birthday it is because we’re still confused with the time and dates due to jet lag I guess lol. After the singing they placed the cake on top of our table and greeted us all a happy birthday! We were silently delighted with the gesture because back home, if you’re staying at a hotel and it happens to be be your special day, the staff will just bring  a slice of cake to your hotel room with a note. Here in Hanoi, our first time in this country, we got ourselves a whole birthday cake on our birthday yay! We’re not used to getting birthday cakes anymore because we’re already adults so we were kinda shy afterwards plus there was one caucasian couple also having breakfast there. That was the time we seriously would like to wear an invisibility cloak for a while lol. It was cute though, I felt like a kid again after we blew our birthday candles. Damn, I forgot to make a wish because we got so self conscious. Later on, we ate a few slice and it tasted really good. I told my sister if she would like to share the rest of the cake to the hotel staff or we’ll just bring it to our room since we have a full sized fridge upstairs. We opted to keep it in the fridge instead because we thought they might be offended if we will not eat the cake. We did not eat much the next day but cake because we need to devour it to show them we loved it. We really did actually. It wasn’t so sweet and tasted like an ice cream cake!

After breakfast we headed back to our hotel room with the cake. Suddenly, I got a call  from the reception regarding our Bai Dihn tour. Puzzled, I told the lady at the front desk that the tour is not for today but tomorrow. It was just a language barrier I guess with the gentleman at the front desk early this morning. It was all good though afterwards,  the lady at the front desk rescheduled the tour for tomorrow instead.  We prepped up for roughly an hour and a half then headed back down to the hotel lobby. We don’t know what’s the name of the lady at the front desk with eye glasses but she was really helpful. We asked her how to get to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Hoan Kiem Lake, One Pillar Pagoda etc. She gladly gave us a map, marked the attractions we’re headed to and even advised to not take a cab or any other ride because everything is just walking distance from the hotel. So we head our way and started walking around the Old Quarter armed with the map she gave us and of course our cash and DIY itinerary. And then, lo and behold, my sister lost the copy of our itinerary (Ms. Front desk lady even added some useful notes to it for our reference). Well, at least we still have our map.

After minutes of walking, we realized that walking the streets of Old Quarter isn’t easy even if you can read maps. It’s way more difficult in real life so we stopped relying on the map and started asking the locals for directions which they all gladly helped. Vietnamese people are friendly even if they barely speak english, they’re just not friendly to each other as motorists, everybody wants to go first that’s why it’s a havoc watching the motorcycles blanketing almost all streets of Hanoi. Alright, so we're told to head straight to get to Hoan Kiem Lake and that’s what we did. We found that Hoan Kiem Lake is a long straight road and you will know you’re there once you see the lake of course and the busy intersection. As soon as we saw the City View Cafe building, we knew outright we found Hoan Kiem Lake as it’s just across.

Hanoi Soul Cafe
We took pictures as soon as we saw the infamous red bridge. There were lots of people there when we arrived so we just took few photos and that’s it. There were temples inside after you walk past the bridge but there’s an entrance fee so we did not avail that anymore because we’re hoping to see more temples in Hanoi. Hunger pang strikes so we decided to visit the City View Cafe because it is famous for their Banh Mi and good view of the Hoan Kiem Lake. Unfortunately, it was closed so we attempted to go to Highlands Coffee which is similar to Starbucks but decided not too since we’re here in Hanoi to try their local dishes and not another coffee with whipped cream because we also have those back home. To make the long story short, since we’re already starving, we instead ate at the Hanoi Soul Cafe, same building as the other two. Commercial establishments in Hanoi is so filled with sales people inviting you to try their restaurant, cafeteria etc. We had their Pho Ga (chicken noodles) and chilled Vietnamese Coffee!  They also have free wifi and a good view of the Old Quarter from the balcony. The Pho Ga cost 55,000.00 VND whilst 35,000.00 VND for the coffee.  The Pho Ga was good and a must try if you wanna veer away from oily foods (which Vietnam has a lot, they have lots of deep fried dish).

Let the tour begin baby!

My sissy came up with our own DIY city tour which would cover the following attractions:
·       Visit St. Joseph’s Cathedral (Address: 40 – Nhà Chung – Hoàn Kiếm)
·       Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum.
·       One Pillar Pagoda
·       Turtle Pagoda
·       Temple of Literature: Originally built as a temple to Confucius, this is the site of Vietnam’s first university dating back to 1070. The temple highlights the importance that Vietnamese society placed then and now on education.
·     Shop for souvenirs at Dong Xuan Market. Opening Hours: 07AM-09PM. Location: Dong Xuan Street, North part of Old Quarter.
·       Mai Trang in Hang Gai St., (where to buy fridge magnets)
·       Afternoon - Watch Water Puppet Show at Thang Long Water Puppet theater  (There are puppet show every day at 15:30 - 17:00 - 18:30 - 20:00 - 21:15 and Sunday at 9:30). Ticket costs between 60.000 - 100.000 VND ($3-5) and can be purchased at doors.

Hồ Hoàn Kiếm which means "Lake of the Returned Sword"
whilst The Huc (Red Bridge) means “Morning Sunlight Bridge.”
Hoan Kiem Lake
Hoan Kiem Lake’s Red bridge isn’t included since it’s just round the corner. The Turtle Pagoda though is a given as it’s right there as well so our next stop would be to visit St. Joseph’s Cathedral just to drop by and offer thanksgiving prayers since it’s our birthday. They don’t have mass that time but the church was open so we were able to take some pictures. St. Joseph’s Cathedral is pretty difficult to track by foot just a heads up. Our map was useful this time plus we asked directions from the locals as well or else we’ll waste time walking and head nowhere. It was a long way from Hoan Kiem Lake to the Cathedral, we were both tired already so we're in the verge of hiring a Cyclo (pronounced as ‘Siklo’) to take us to the rest of the attractions in our list.
Turtle Pagoda

Before we decide on taking the Cyclo (they are everywhere in the Old Quarter) we bought some more bottled water to combat the heat. For the nth time we were asked again if we’re Thai, we said we’re Filipinos and the store owner was so delighted for some reason. I remember when we were in Cambodia years back, we were asked the same question. I never thought we’ll answer the same question many times here in Hanoi. Not that I hate being asked about my nationality, it’s quite fun to be asked actually because it means that the locals find you interesting plus Thai women are skinny and pretty so I guess that’s supposed to be flattering lol.

I took the map out once more to figure out how we’re supposed to go to HCM Mausoleum, this Cyclo driver about the age of 60-70 approached us and offered us a ride. We started negotiating, we asked him if he could take us then to HCM Mausoleum, Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda, Dong Xuan Market and lastly back to Hoan Kiem Lake where the Than Long Theater is to watch the water puppet show. He offered 400k VND for the two of us or (200k VND each/20 bucks) and we asked multiple times if that’s everything since he barely speaks english, he said yes so we took his word for it. He recommended The Temple of Literature first because it’s the nearest one from where we’re at. Off we go with Granpa Cyclo pedalist.

the beautiful view of the Old Quarter
from our Cyclo..
Cyclo
Taking the Cyclo is such a fun field experience although it felt a little touristy. We thought, we’re tourists anyways so why not? It’s quite difficult to track where the tourist attractions are located in the Old Quarter if you haven’t done an initial stroll the first time you set foot in Hanoi. So, just do yourself a favor, get someone who would take you there, problem solved (unless you have ample time in the world to stay in Hanoi which we don’t that’s why we took the Cyclo instead).
The Temple of Literature. Vietnam’s
first university dating back to 1070.

The Temple of Literature
Mr. Cyclo pedalist waited outside whilst we’re taking pictures. We did not spend much time in The Temple of Literature ‘cuz there’s a fee to get inside. We don’t want to be too late neither for the water puppet show later.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum & Museum
The HCH Mausoleum was huge. We just took few more photos and watched the little marching thing and that’s it. We also swing by the HCM Museum which was walks away from the Mausoleum and just took few photos outside and off we go to our next stop which was the One Pillar Pagoda.

One Pillar Pagoda, across are th
souvenir shops.
One Pillar Pagoda
It was just a small Pagoda that’s why it was possibly called One Pillar Pagoda. Nothing much to see here so we just decided to buy souvenir items. We bought five fridge magnets for 80k VND in total which was originally 20k VND a piece. My sister asked for a discount, we got a 20% off instead. We also bought a Cyclo replica for five bucks. The seller did not grant us anymore discount for the Cyclo toy. We thought, it’s still a good deal because when we went to Dong Xuan Market later on, they sell the same Cyclo replica for a hefty 280kVND ($14.00) and we got ours for 100k VND ($5.00). We thought, what a rip off right?

We bought this baby Cyclo from a
souvenir shop across the One
Pillar Pagoda for $5.
Dong Xuan Market
Time for some souvenir shopping! Dong Xuan Market looks more like Quiapo to me than Divisoria. A lot of the souvenir items here were quite overpriced. Good thing, we already bought most of our souvenirs from the souvenir shop whilst at One Pillar Pagoda. We still bought a few stuff such as couple of bracelets for our nieces (20k VND a piece), this sweet and sour tasting dried fruits for 50k VND, handbag for our other sissy (260k VND or $13), 5 purses all for 100k VND. We’re so friggin' millionaires here in Vietnam man! Off to our last stop for the Day - the Thang Long Water Puppet Theater. Sorry I wasn't able to take pictures of Dong Xuan Market, it's a busy place.

End of today’s tour
Thang Long Water Puppet Theater Lobby

Mr. Cyclo guy dropped us off in front of the Water Puppet Theater and this is where we handed him our payment. He barely speaks english like I said so it was really difficult deciphering what he’s trying to say. He gestures something about the bills so I thought he was returning my 200k VND. My sister and I were so effin confused already thinking if he’s ripping us off or what until he said the word ‘tip’ that’s the only time we both got what he’s trying to say. Since it’s my discretion ‘cuz I have all our USD bills (whilst my sister keeps all of our Dongs), I gave him 3 bucks for tip which made him extremely happy. Let’s just say his job isn’t easy and he even slowed down many times probably due to leg fatigue. Like I said, he’s old and when you’re older, your bones are brittle and he shouldn’t still be working considering his age. I could’ve given him a better tip if he did not ask first lol. There are times having an initiative isn’t good, and this is one of those instances :D

Water Puppet Show Sequence
Thang Long Water Puppet Theater
Alas! Our last itinerary for the day is to watch the water puppet show regularly held at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theater.

We got there around 5:00 PM and went straight to the ticketing booth to purchase tickets. When I asked how much I was told its 100k VND or $5 per ticket for the 5:20 PM show. I was just wondering how come it cost 100k VND considering it wasn't even in the front row. Nevertheless, we still bought two tickets before it gets sold out then grab some late snack at the closest eating joint around. We’re running out of Dongs so just used some of our USDs for food.

5:20 PM - We made it to the Theater on time although quite on a rush. There were flyers outside the theater so we took the one written in english (and the one in Viet for souvenir) because the whole show is in vietnamese. It was quite enjoyable even if I didn’t understand a thing. This is what I love about cultural performances, it’s not meant to be understood, it’s mean to be appreciated as it is regardless of the language used. Our only regret is we weren’t able to sit somewhere pretty close to the stage to get a good view of the performance. I loved the juxtaposition of lights and of course the music which somewhat sounded like Hindustrani to me. It was fun, a little weird at times but what they did was showcased the Vietnamese culture in a comical yet artistic way. I recommend the puppet show to those who are looking to visit Hanoi, it'll complete your Vietnam travel experience.
My sister and I sat somewhat far from the stage so we
weren't able to get a better view of the water puppets. 😕
Nevertheless, we enjoyed the show!

Quarter to 7:00 PM..

After watching the puppet show (which lasted for about an hour), we headed back to our hotel by foot even though we seriously do not know how because using the map is much more complicated like I said than read the street signs (although we still looked at the map from time to time though). I’m pretty good with directions, just not the way too complex ones so I led my sister to the familiar streets we passed by early today. I told her we’ll look for Hang Manh Street and it’s easier to find Bat Dan from there. We bought some more bottled water for 20k VND each and stopped for a while to see if we’re heading the right way and thank God we did as if a guardian angel is leading us back to our hotel. One last look at the map and there we found the familiar street where our hotel sits. It’s not easy to find by foot if it’s your first time in Hanoi so we took notes of landmarks such as the ‘Pho' or noodle joints around and the names of the hotels close to Little Hanoi Diamond. Had a blast with our little DIY city tour today! I told my sister, we are our own travel agency. She arranged all of our itinerary and I track the location and take care of the accounting part lol. I love this little adventure of ours, I just wish we had more time to eat and try more vietnamese food. We’re just really pressed for time and yeah that's a bummer.

Today’s Expenses:
some of the souvenir items we bought, the rest were
already distributed 😜

**PHP3,833.45/2 = PHP1,916.73 per head is how much we spent today.**

Oh btw, the only place we weren't able to visit as per our itinerary was this store called Mai Trang along Hang Gai (they sell fridge magnets) because we did not see it the first time we passed by Hang Gai Street. We saw it on our way back to our hotel and we already bought fridge magnets from the souvenir shops across One Pillar Pagoda, too bad.

Anyways, we had a lovely birthday today, tired but ecstatic. Tomorrow is boating and Pagoda day. We have to be up early ‘cuz our tour starts at 8:00 AM. Slumberland is calling…
