Renew

I hate government offices because they're often crowded and manned by grumpy government employees. I only visit government offices if I really have no choice like right now, my passport just expired few days ago and I have plans of travelling again (hopefully) couple of months from now if God willing for my birthday. This is something my sister and I do every year—travel, go to a brand new destination, explore, be lost and be found, collect memories and go back home renewed.

Going back, we decided to renew our passport last minute yesterday at the DFA office in Baguio instead of travelling back down to Manila to save us both from the hassles of scheduling an appointment and having our passports shipped. We were surprised how easy breezy it was that we didn’t even schedule an appointment. We just swung by and in less than fifteen minutes we’re all set. I thought it’s probably because of the Panagbenga Festival (Flower Festival) everyone seems pretty busy.  It was past 4 p.m already and it’s less than two hours before closing (DFA office hours ends at 6 p.m.) We approached the guard/told him were there to renew our passports. He asked if it’s for ‘application' so we replied it's for ‘renewal' and he insists it’s ‘application.’ To end the conversation we just said ok yes it’s for 'renewal application’ no matter how redundant and confusing it may sound. I don’t understand why DFA uses such term because the word 'renewal' itself is already self explanatory right? You only ‘apply' for something if it’s new gadh.

Information Section

Moving on, we headed straight to the Information section right in front of the glass entrance door and presented all of our documents. We were given this piece of paper which requires the passport holder to provide his/her emergency contact person (with name & phone number), read the waiver and sign.

Processing Section

As soon as I accomplished the emergency contact form, I handed all my requirements to the person at the ‘RENEWAL’ window. I was asked for my actual ID (I used my TIN ID), was informed about the fee: P1,200 for ‘rush’ processing (10 business days) whilst P950 for ‘regular' processing (which would take roughly 3 weeks if I’m not mistaken). Since I opted to renew yesterday, a Saturday the ‘rush processing’ option automatically applies. I DO have a choice actually, to come in on a weekday and fall in line as early as 5 a.m. OR pay P1,200 for Saturday passport renewal and finish the whole thing in 15-20 minutes. Of course I chose the later because I despise waiting in vain.

Cashier

The Next step is to pay the processing fee at the cashier. You just need to wait for the receipt of course afterwards you will be instructed to wait for your turn at the 'encoding section’ which was the last part. Don’t worry because they will announce your name when your turn comes. I kind of noticed they are much more friendlier compared to DFA peepz in Manila (the last time I renewed my passport there was 2011 so I don't know if it's the same now).

Encoding Section

The ‘encoding’ part is when you get your picture taken. You will be asked to remove your earrings as always (any earring including piercing studs etc., my sister was asked to take off her Marilyn Monroe piercing). For ladies, you have to tuck your hair behind your ears. Afterwards, you have to proof read/check and confirm your details if they were encoded correctly, scan your ID, get your left and right thumb finger print then finally affix your digital signature. Once everything is set, they will stamp the date and time at the back of your receipt when you could pick up your spankin' new passport.

Please bring the following requirements before you visit any DFA office to save you time:
  1. One government issued ID (SSS, TIN etc), original & photocopy
  2. Your passport
  3. Photocopy of your passport (the page where your picture is, passport # etc.)
Just a suggestion, if you wish to renew your passport at the DFA office in Baguio, Saturday would be the best time--between 4 to 6 p.m. since this is already their off peak hours thus you will be accommodated right away.

In claiming your passport, please bring the following with you:
  1. Your old passport (say Goodbye because they will punch holes to your old one)
  2. Your Receipt.
I’m excited to see my new passport because my travel life for the next five years depends on it :)

Mailer Demon

Gmail gave me a headache after I accidentally created a new gmail address which attached itself to my blogger account. It took me about a couple of days figuring out how to revert it back to my yahoo email which was anyways the original email addy associated with my blogger account. I tried the steps I found from forums and google but none of them helped. They said, I should go to account settings and delete the email addy which I want taken off and that should do it. No help neither because all I was trying to do is detach the primary email (I mistakenly created) from my blogger account since I’m using my Yahoo email to login to blogger so I don’t need a freakin’ new email add. Are you as confused as I am now?

Ok, I just figured minutes ago that, all I need to do is to login to my gmail email using the account I want deleted. Once logged in, go to  My Account > Delete your account or services (lower left hand portion inside the My Account screen) > Delete products > Gmail (you have 3 choices: Google+ ,YouTube & Gmail). Google will ask you how would you like to login to your account (I chose to login using my  default Yahoo mail account) And that should take care of it.

I guess this is something new with Blogger, they will insist for you  to use a Gmail address now to login to Blogger because Blogger.com is now owned by google as well which wasn’t the case before when I created my Blogger account many years ago.

For The Love of Movies Eymen!

This time around I’ll make a random reviews of movies belonging to different genres. Most of them got stuck in my head because they’re either disturbing, interesting, really nice or i got extremely bored watching them.

Bedevilled (2010 film)
South Korea | Horror/Thriller
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Casts:

Seo Young-hee ... Kim Bok-nam
Ji Sung-won ... Hae-won

I watched Bedevilled upon my sister’s recommendation. She told me it was based on a true massacre story which happened in an island in Korea and, it was shown at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival as well. Upon research, I was surprised that it was a blockbuster hit although it didn’t appear so mainstream to me not that I meant that negatively. It’s just that here in the country, award winning flicks do not really enjoy commercial success most of the time. I was kind of perturbed by this movie because of the gore, immorality and socially unacceptable stuff I’ve seen although I highly recommend this to people who are fascinated with something that’s out of the ordinary, non-stereotype movies.

Plot:

The movie began with Hae-won, a single and an independent woman who works for a bank in Seoul having PMS errr refusing to grant a poor client’s request for a cash loan I think. She was so grumpy she yelled at the poor woman despite her begging and I was like if she did that to me it’ll be cat fight for sure lol. Moving on, she stepped out of the office to visit the police station to identify suspects for a murder case. When Hae-won went back she found out that her colleague granted the poor client's wish for a cash loan. She confronts her co-worker and slapped her. She was suspended because of what she did although in real life that’s terminable of course.

Hae-won was invited by her childhood friend Kim Bok-nam to their hometown, a Southern Island called Mudo. Kim lives with her in-laws. Her mother-in-law is a ruthless old hag who verbally abuses her.  Kim was married to a womanizer who often bring home prostitutes and make out in front of her which is totally looney. Korean’s culture is no different than ours, conservatives believe that a woman should marry and give in to her husband’s will. Hae-won on the other hand is the opposite of Kim, she doesn’t need a man to fend for her which the other totally admire. Hae-won stayed in Mudo and witnessed everything dysfunctional in Kim’s life, she kept mum about it. Kim started to have suspicions about her husband molesting her daughter thus came up with a plan to escape.

One fateful day, Kim and her daughter attempted to escape the husband by taking a boat bound to Seoul. Unfortunately, the Prostitute (who’s intention is pure to help Kim and her daughter) stupidly asked help from her husband’s brother thus they got caught. Kim was badly battered again by his husband because of what happened and the women in the island, instead of helping Kim, took her husband’s side. Kim’s daughter got in a way and was hurled (by his now mad) husband, the poor kid hit her head on a rock and died instantly. Traumatized and pained by her daughter’s death, Kim lost her sanity and killed everyone in the island sparing only her father-in-law who seemed to be the only person who never said nor done anything bad towards her. Hae-won was able to escape on a boat thus was also spared from death. Hae-won went back to Seoul.

Kim, after killing everyone in the island, went to Seoul for the first time,  found Hae-wan and attempted to kill the later as well but failed. Kim, now deranged died after Hae-won struck her with her flute’s sharp end. Hae-won used to teach Kim how to play the flute when they were little.

I later on found that Kim was abused and raped as a teenager. She was forced into marriage so someone could father the child she had out of wedlock. This made her owe a great sense of gratitude from his husband. Kim however, asked help from Hae-won, she never did. Kim protected Hae-won but the later was so indifferent towards her.

I felt bad for Kim because she was a victim of circumstances. The movie also justifies the importance of education especially in women. For one to have a good life education is vital because this makes a person aware of his or her basic rights. Being well aware and informed liberates a person from the pain brought about by ignorance. This film will struck you like were hit by shards from a broken mirror, you will feel the pain that Kim went through, the feeling of being lost and never found.

My next movie is Anna Karenina.

Anna Karenina (2012)
historical/romance
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Casts:

Keira Knightley - Princess Anna Arkadievna Karenina
Jude Law - Count Alexei Alexandrovich Karenin, Anna's husband
Aaron Taylor-Johnson - Count Alexei Kirillovich Vronsky, Anna’s lover, a cavalry officer

As much as I hate movies about infidelity because there’s always someone on the losing end, I felt the urge to watch it because it stars famous actors such as Keira Knightley and Jude Law so I thought it must be good.

Alright, Princess Anna is married to the powerful Count Karenin and was blessed with a son. So from their names I therefore conclude came the movie title Anna Karenina ok?

Princess Anna fell in love with young calvary officer Counth Vronsky. The scandalous love affair began when  Counth Vronsky started following and pursuing Princess Anna. The Princess gave in to  Counth Vronsky’s charm without taking into account she’s already married to Count Karenin.

Boy it was a lengthy film.

It was a long standing love affair between the Princess and  Count Vronsky. The Princess got pregnant with Vronsky's daughter resulting to the two being the talk of the royalty. Count Karenin was ready to forgive Princess Anna on her deathbed but as soon as the Princess got better she continued her affair with Count Vronsky. Because of this, Count Karenin refrained the Princess from seeing their son which is reason enough, anyone’s patience would’ve run out given the situation.

Princess Anna, upon realizing the weight of her infidelity, ended her life by jumping into an approaching train.

Honestly, I got bored with this movie and went totally sleepyhead because it was really lengthy. Nevertheless, if you dig century old love affairs like Mills & Boon kinda stuff then you might enjoy watching this film.

Testament of Youth (2014)
British Drama
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Casts:

Alicia Vikander as Vera Brittain
Kit Harington as Roland Leighton
Colin Morgan as Victor Richardson
Taron Egerton as Edward Brittain

Vera fights with her parents over going to Oxford. Her parents would like her to play the piano well so she could find a husband and not go to college, Vera disagreed because she believes a woman could do better than just marry. Vera met Roland, an acquaintance of his brother Edward. Roland found Vera loves poetry and went to school in Oxford. Vera at first dislikes Roland because she thought he’s just like many other men who do not believe in women empowerment but proved herself wrong when Roland told her that he was raised by his Mother, a single parent. Victor, Edward’s friend however likes Vera.

Edward persuaded their Father to send Vera to Oxford. He refused at first but he agreed later on. Edward, Roland and Victor left to go back to Army school. Vera showed interest in Roland. The two exchanged letters.

Vera went ahead and took her entrance exam at the Somerville College in Oxford. She tried her best to overcome intimidations from people back then who  do not believe that a woman like could earn a college degree. On the day of Edward’s graduation from Military school, Vera received letter stating she got in at Somerville. She pursued her college education but stopped school when the war breaks. Vera chose to set aside her college education to become a war nurse. A lot of things happened with the war getting in the way between Ronald and Vera’s challenging love story.

Vera and Ronald’s love story was tragic though because Ronald died in the middle of war before they even marry. Becoming a war nurse though worked to her advantage because her  brother was taken to the camp where she works thus she was able to save Edward, her brother’s life. Edward went back to being a soldier as soon as he was better, asked Vera to promise him that she will finish college no matter what which Vera did.

Edward died in the war as well. Vera seemed to have lost all the people who were dear to her. She despised the war because of retribution which seemed to have become a never ending cycle. In the end, Vera earned her college degree, became a successful writer thus wrote the book Testament of Youth which became a major bestseller, a memoir on the first world war.

Let me go to the other side of the globe. This time, let’s go to Thailand romance movies.

Love of Siam (2007)

Thai: รักแห่งสยาม
Gay Themed/Romance Drama
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Casts:
Mario Maurer as Tong
Witwisit Hiranyawongkul as Mew
Chermarn Boonyasak as Tang/June

Tang and Tong are siblings and neighbors with Mew. Tong and Mew became good friends when Mew defended Tong after he was beaten up by his bully classmates. Even as kids Mew is noticeably effeminate compared to Tong.

Tong’s sister Tang, disappeared during a camping trip in Chiang Mai which devastated their father, he was guilty for letting Tang go with her friends alone plus the longing feeling (for her now gone daughter) turned him into an alcoholic. Mew and his family then moved to Bangkok. Tong and Mew  did not see each other in years. Mew turned to music after his Grandmother died and became a part of a band called August.

One day, Tong went to Bangkok to buy Mew’s CD but it was already sold and on his way to find another store he stumbles upon Mew and his band. They exchanged numbers and saw each other like the old times. Mew, reunited with Tong realized Tong’s father’s condition introduced June to Tong and his mother because she was a deadringer of her late sister Tang. Tong and his mother employed June to pretend she’s the long lost Tang. June was compelled to make up stories about their trip to Chiang Mai to Tong’s father. June’s presence somewhat helped Tong’s father recover but he never quit drinking which even more aggravated his health.

Tong and Mew’s friendship grew deeper. Tong’s mother saw Tong and Mew kissing which confirms indeed that the two is 'more than just friends.’ Tong’s mother talked to Mew, she expressed disappointed over their special friendship and that he wishes for Tong to finish school, have a job someday and a family of his own. Mew understood and later on starts avoiding Tong. Tong was puzzled. The gay rumour spread to Tong and Mew’s group of friends. Tong and Mew did not deny nor confirmed. Mew left his band, distraught after knowing they will never be more than friends. Tong officially broke up with his girlfriend.

What I like about this movie is that, Mew’s friends accepted him despite knowing he’s gay which was not something I anticipated since it’s very difficult nowadays for teenage kids to keep an open mind.

Anyways, Mew reunited with his band. Tong watched them perform onstage for the first time. Tong and Mew agreed to be just friends. June left to pursue a life of her own.

I’m usually not a fan of gay themed movies because they usually have anticipated endings such as two people not ending up together because of moral standards etc. But, Love of Siam is not just about two people. It tackled about relationship and love in all its facets.

Last but not least, another one of those Thai Gay themed flicks called Yes or No.

Yes or No (2010)
Thai: อยากรัก ก็รักเลย
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Casts:
Sucharat Manaying - as Pie
Suppanad Jittaleela - as Kim
Arisara Tongborisuth - as Jane
Soranut Yupanun - as P'van

After I scoured the web for best Thai romance movies I stumbled upon tons of gay themed Thai flicks. This made me think, I guess, prevalence of such genre only proves that they have predominantly accepted the existence of same sex relationship in their conservative culture.

Pie hates lesbians or what they call a ‘Tom' (which I guess is short for Tomboy) for no reason. I guess it’s probably because her mother dislikes Toms as well thus Pie is living up to that preference. Along came Kim, her Tom-looking yet confused room mate at the University. Pie doesn’t like Kim at first because she feels that Kim’s a Tom (because she sure looks like a lanky guy at first glance). Kim was nice to Pie no matter what because she’s a nice person. Jane, on the other hand likes Kim because she’s been in a relationship with a lesbian before. Pie started to develop feelings for Kim and in the long run the two became a couple.

Kim and Pie had a misunderstanding when Pie saw Jane and Kim together. Kim thought Jane was Pie so she hugged her since she was sick and wearing a night mask. Pie, broken hearted went home and told her mother she’s in love with a lesbian. Kim went to Pie’s house and confessed to her mother. Pie’s mother was of course against their relationship as expected because she wanted Pie to have a normal life when she gets older. Kim left the University and went back home to their farm. Pie chased Kim and confessed she wants her back in her life. Happy ending it is.

My take on same sex relationship is that as long as the two people in a relationship treat each other right the sexual preference should be out of the question. I know not everyone may have an open mind but that's life, these sort of relationships exist whether we like it or not.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - highly recommended
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  - somewhat highly recommended
⭐️⭐️⭐️    - it was alright.
⭐️⭐️       - nah.
⭐️          - waste of time.

It's Already the 21st Century F.C.O.L

it's that easy your ass boo!
I've been through hell opening an EON bank account today because Union Bank's useless website is so friggin’ incomplete. They even handed out this piece of paper the last time I dropped by indicating all the requirements yet it didn't help neither.

I am a very organized person AND I always make sure to prepare things ahead of time to avoid hassles. But, Union Bank’s shitty website did not prepare me for the worst. I even read other blogs to make sure I bring everything with me before I head off to the bank, even the ones not mentioned in their website but things still went awry.

I went to Union Bank minutes past 9 A.M which is the start of their office hours. I have all my requirements with me: photocopies of my two (2) government issued photo I.Ds (SSS & TIN) along with my actual I.D.s,  P350 cash for the visa debit card annual fee plus the money I’ll be depositing to open my EON account, proof of billing (which is under my sister’s name) and my reference number from Union Bank’s shitty website. I chose to open an account with Union Bank because they don’t charge if you withdraw money from Paypal to your EON account not knowing it’s such a hassle opening an account with them. My sister and I went to the bank together because we both would like to open an account to take advantage of EON’s free Paypal withdrawal.

As soon as it was my sister’s turn, we were told that at least one of our government I.D’s should bear our current address. For crying out loud. We haven’t updated our address since we moved because this never happened before with any banks where we opened our accounts. They wouldn’t honor just her SSS I.D because it does not bear any address. Of course because an SSS I.D only bears your SSS Number, Date of Birth and name. So why on earth it wasn’t indicated in their f*cked up website in the first place??? To resolve this, we went to the nearest BIR office to update our address in our TIN I.Ds, lined up (good thing it wasn’t queuing). At the BIR office we were told that EVEN IF we’ve been residing and working here (where we're based now) for five years, they still have to verify if our TINs were already transferred. I was on the verge of saying of course, our TINs have been updated since we’ve been living and working here for five years and we even went to their office when we had our RDO's transferred from Manila! Nevertheless, I kept my mouth shut and managed to stay calm. We filled out BIR Form 0605 (if my memory serves me right), we were told to pay P100 to any of the banks allowed to take in payments for BIR transactions. There’s tons of them actually but majority of them were either offline of just wouldn’t take BIR payments for yadda yadda reasons. We went to DBP, RCBC, BPI and last but not least Security Bank. Only Security Bank out of all four banks I mentioned took the payment. Such a hassle right? My patience is already running out and I already told my sister one more annoyance trigger and I’m gonna say never mind to opening an EON account with Union Bank.

After settling our payments, we headed straight to the BIR Office again to present our receipt and finally got our spanking new TIN (cardboard) ID. It didn’t take long for us to get our new ID in fairness to the BIR Office we went to. My only problem was, we had to go out just to make a payment. Such a hassle right? Good thing I took a photo of the lists of accredited banks whilst at the BIR office because I had a gut feeling things may not go on as planned as usual because chances are it will  be 99% of the time.

Alright, went back to Union Bank as soon as we had our TIN I.Ds photocopied and laminated. My sister was able to finally open her EON account this time without any problem. She got her ATM card outright after filling out the bank forms and all. Now came my turn, I was told by the sarcastic dickhead customer service guy there seems to be another problem. That, I need to have a billing statement under my name. AGAIN, their crappy website DID NOT mention that so I was under the impression that our PLDT DSL bill (under my sister’s name) would suffice. Oh man! Seriously?? I’m really this close to going berserk. To make the long story short, I went to the nearest internet shop to access my credit card account so I could have my paper bill printed out. Of course I can make things work! Dickhead was even surprised that I came back in less than 15 minutes to get a copy of my bill duh. After 3 gruelling hours going back and forth (from Union Bank to BIR to other banks) I was finally able to open my EON account. Damn. If only SOME banks make it easy for their clients things wouldn’t be this way.

I am a technology buff and I make use of technology to its fullest because that’s why they’re here for right? Things would’ve been easier If we just use the power of internet, click a button instead of heading off to banks. Why not make your payment using an app instead of filling out a form and lining up in queue? I’ve been paying my bills online for over a decade already and I just can’t wrap my head around why do we still prefer the old school way? It won’t hurt to embrace changes especially if it makes things easier for us. Isn’t it enjoyable to veer away from stress and be able to use your time productively instead of squandering it away lining up in queue. And to those old school banks, don’t you think it’s time to upgrade your century old system and stop wasting people’s time? Time is gold. Every second counts because being time conscious is crucial as well in saving lives don’t you think?

As an end note, I would love to send a feedback to Union Bank’s website for wasting so much of my time today because of their surreal requirements. It took me three hours just to get a plastic ATM card. Seriously? Let me also say that their website is not accessible MOST of the time and all I am getting are bunch of error messages and it's been undergoing maintenance for ages! The last time I checked, they didn't even specify which browsers their site is compatible with. Geez. My sissy and I had ice cream as soon as we got home because we were so pissed off and stressed out as well opening an account with Union Bank.

To save you from all the hassles here's a quick run down of what they actually require to open an EON account:
  • Get your reference number first through Union Bank's website  before you visit them.
  • Bring any government issued photo I.D which bears your current address (original and photocopied)
  • Bring any Utility bill under the name of the person who is opening the account such as cable, telephone, electric, water, credit card etc. (original and photocopied)
  • P350 cash for the EON/Visa debit card annual fee
  • Cash to be deposited to your account (At least P200 if you're looking to link your account with Paypal, if not then any increment will do like P100 and above maybe)
And after all the troubles Hooray! (sarcasm) you will get your ATM card right away. Just an fyi, they don't have maintaining balance by the way, although I read somewhere they charge P200 if your EON account is inactive for a year whilst P500 if it's been dormant for a year. These requirements are the most important ones in my experience. Unbelievably, complying consumed so much of my time because of their extremely poor communication channels.

DIY Vanity Kit

I will call this baby etsy lilly :)
Before I add the rose brooch..
I just used what's left of my burlap (woven fabric usually made from skin of the jute plant or sisal fibres)  today to make this eco-friendly make up pouch or should I say kikay kit. What's a kikay kit by btw? It serves as your carry-on 'vanity kit' which contains all your make up/beauty essentials and pretty much everything a woman can't live without. I can't leave the house without my make up pouch (i'm serious) and I would definitely go back home (if I'm still not late for work or whatever commitments I have for the day) just to collect it. I know it sounds crazy but c'mon ladies you know what I'm saying is true lol.

she's finally done...
My diy make up kit
made with looove!
I've been scouring online shops and malls for the best make-up pouch (that would suit my style like something bohemian, shabby chic, earthy etcetera) for so long now and I just can't seem to find one that's pretty light and compact to store all my make-up and stuff.  So, to address this, like this line in this movie called May, "if you can't find one, make one," I decided to make my very own make-up pouch/vanity/kikay kit. I used unbleached muslin cloth (katsa) this time to hold the burlap together, hand sewn it, used jute twines, decorative buttons and walah! The birth of my first handmade make up pouch.

I did not spend anything by the way because I used left over craft materials. I thought of embellishing it further by adding a pretty printed cloth so it'll look more alive but I don't have spare clippings unfortunately. I thought of adding a burlap rose to it so it won't be too plain instead. The muslin cloth I used by the way was made from an old eco-bag which was an office freebie I got years ago, dissected it/cut it out to make it useful :D It's true, the things in life are free and handmade of course ;)

Oh My Terrarium

my first terrarium..
I got so bored today because I have nothing to do and I'm running out of craft materials. Isn't that flaky? I have been yearning to have a terrarium of my own so I decided to use whatever materials I could find inside our house to further my terrarium project. If you might be wondering what a terrarium is, it's as simple as putting your plants inside an aquarium complete with accessories of your choice. Since I do not have the complete materials for my terrarium, I pretty much just suit myself with whatever I was able to rummage around.

To make a terrarium, you should have those little stones, soil, charcoal and the rest can be your choice of decoration which can be miniature plastic toys etc. For me, I used those gravel included in one of our plastic plant vases, those charcoal we use for grilling then crushed it, soil (which came handy when I bought my rose cactus) and last but not least a medium sized fish bowl. We don't have fishes at home by the way so no fish was harm in the process lol. If you may be wondering where I got the fish bowl from, we use them to store office supplies such as paper clips etc. They also serve as picture frames or should I say 'picture bowls' for that 'beach house' feel. Indoor plants are good for your room or house because as per my research, a terrarium (particularly) can absorb pollution from smoke, chloroform, benzene and many other pollutants that can lead to sickness. In short, they help improve health and well-being.

Hemp Gadget Pouch

My diy 5x4 burlap gadget pouch :)
I got so busy last night making my first gadget pouch bag out of my favourite craft materials: burlap, decorative buttons & jute twines. I hand sewn it since I do not have any electric sewing machine as of yet and even if I do I don’t know how to use one lol.

My mom owns a manual sewing machine which she bought for her sewing hobby many years ago (she practically sew all of our curtains) sitting around the house, however, I converted it into my Dad’s desk. My mom taught me how to use it when I was so much younger but I did not absorb much of what she taught me probably because I know how to sew using my hands so learning how to use a manual sewing machine did not appeal to me that much. Going back, I thought of creating my very own pouch because I want it to perfectly fit my recently bought external hard drive. I will be calling it my hemp gadget pouch

I think he's a happy camper :D
I hand sewn a small handkerchief to cushion the insides (or any cloth will do) and at the same time to make it easier for me to sew the burlap together. Burlap isn’t easy to sew by the way because of the gaps and it frays easily so you have to use any cloth to sort of hold it together. I iron pressed the finished product afterwards so the little burlap threads won’t protrude. I usually polish the burlap by letting fire from a candle lick it just to rim the edges pretty much. Be careful when you do this as you don't want your project to cause fire (it's optional anyways). I'm just a little disturbed by the protruding threads that's why.

So here it is! I’m looking to put up my very own craft store someday and maybe I’m gonna try out a few ones for sale one of these days teehee. This burlap pouch is 5 inches long and 4 inches wide by the way.

Lazada No More

my second purchase with Lazada
I have been apprehensive about purchasing another item from Lazada because my first shopping experience with them did not go well. It took almost a month before the item reached my doorstep. First of, they don’t set realistic timeframe for their goods to reach the buyer. According to my niece, their service is ok if you’re down in Manila, it will not take too long before you get your item. However, if you live outside Metro Manila (like I do) it’s a different story.

I made my second purchase with Lazada last January 26, 2016. I thought I’ll give them another shot even if my first purchase did not go well simply because they offer free shipping for any item over Php1,000 plus other online shops do not have the color that I want for the item I’m eyeing for which is this Dark Gray 1TB Transcend External Hard Drive. Lazada also sell it for a much cheaper price and it’s COD. I also like the fact that, after your order is placed, they will send you a text and email notification indicating the ETA (estimated time of arrival) for your item, update you regarding the status (i.e. if it was already shipped or in the verification process etc.) through their website or if you have the Lazada app. But, once the item is shipped this is when the problem sets in.

my matte macbook case from
Shopee
As per the email and sms I got from Lazada, my item will arrive around January 30 or not later than February 1, 2016. Come to think of it, I just ordered the item January 26 and I live up north so normally it takes one week for my online purchases to arrive. The shortest maybe one day if shipped overnight at a higher cost of course like this macbook case I bought recently from Shopee (an online shop). I paid P180 for shipping which was all worth it because I got my item the next day. With Lazada, I expected a little longer than a week but not almost a month during my first purchase. Since it’s my second purchase with them, I expected a shorter timeframe, at least one to less than a couple of weeks the most. Still, that did not happen.

The item was shipped last January 27 and I have been closely monitoring my tracking number viewable through LBC’s website (the courier company). I noticed after three days that the item’s status isn’t changing as if it was stuck with LBC for three days already. So, I decided to call their toll free number. I was advised that they will check it further and to expect a call within the day. And so I did, I got a phone call from LBC to let me know that they’re all booked up thus unable to accommodate the item any longer so they returned it back to Lazada. I mean what the fudge? No one notified me hadn’t I called LBC. Take note, the item is supposed to arrive not later than the first of February and it’s already the 30th of January when I called. This is what I’m talking about when I said that their ETA is unrealistic. I sent an email to Lazada. Someone emailed me back from Lazada from obviously a template. My order was on hiatus for five days.

February 4, 2016 - Oh well, Lazada sent me an email to let me know that I have a new tracking number. In short, they cannot push LBC to ship my order so they turned to Air21. Ok, I was at least glad it’s moving and not stuck in their warehouse. This time around I was given another ETA which was on or before 7 Feb - 9 Feb, 2016.

I kept tracking my order online because I wasn’t happy with how slow the turn of events were. I called Air21 to see how come it’s over 48 hours and I still cannot track my package (this is how worried I’ve become). I was told that sometimes it’s not encoded or updated on time but not to worry because even if the tracking number isn't updated real time online the shipment goes on and won't be affected rest assured. I was fine with that, at least my item is already in transit somewhere.

February 8 - another update as per AIR21’s website:  02/08/2016 17:57 Shipment arrived at the Air21 station on 02/08/2016 17:57.

It only means that my order is already in town. OMG. I’m so happy. I called AIR21 (their local office) to check when will it be delivered to my house. I was assured February 9 (since the item arrived at their warehouse on a holiday - Feb. 8 Chinese New Year), next day supposedly. My happiness was short-lived though because nothing came.

My sister called AIR21 yesterday, we learned that my order was left behind for (supposedly) yesterday’s delivery. I was like, seriously?? I was pissed off because I have been waiting for that darn package for almost three weeks already! I sent AIR21 an email complaint (no matter how I hate ranting) to let them know I have been waiting for that package for three weeks and that it’s really urgent. I got an email response after a while to let me know someone will get back to me regarding my complaint.

Alas, around 6:30PM last night our door bell rang, it was the package indeed! I was happy that it finally came and I appreciate the fact that AIR21 still delivered it even if it was already late and I was already told that it will be shipped the next day (which is today supposedly). I appreciate the effort really except that the item's been sitting in their office for two days. Nevertheless, I have forgiven them, I got my package anyways. I’m that easy to please really even if it was still a day behind schedule. Lazada said February 9, I received it yesterday February 10. If Lazada is a shooter out in a battlefield for instance, he'll be dead by now for constantly failing to hit the target.

I’m happy with my order, I'm just wasn’t happy with the way it was dealt. I can now conclude that I’m done, I asked Lazada to delete my account to save me from all the hassles shopping with them. Unfortunately, they don't have any capability yet to delete customers account. They suggested instead to opt out from all email alerts instead geez.

With all fairness to Lazada, all the items I got from them were of excellent quality. I was just not impressed with their customer service. I understand that once the item is shipped, the full responsibility is already in the hands of the courier company. What I just did not appreciate is the fact that every time problem arises, the way to resolution is always customer triggered-- you have to follow it up yourself because Lazada’s supposedly useful tracking tool isn’t reliable and the ever unrealistic timeframe they set for purchases outside Manila. I have been shopping online for almost a decade and I thought Lazada would revolutionize online shopping experience but they didn't. They failed short in so many ways. I understand the long timeframe if I shop through eBay because it’s an international purchase, but for a local purchase? Three weeks or more isn’t impressive. I still consider myself lucky though because I’ve read from other online shoppers out there that some of them waited three months before their package arrived.

Shopping online is supposedly easy because you don’t have to drive off to shopping centres, endure the traffic and all. I just don’t understand why does it have to be this difficult. Is that so hard nowadays to experience seamless online shopping? I hope someday online shopping would be done in three easy ways: click, shop, sit back and relax. No customer initiated actions, nothing like that, and delivery schedule is adhered to accordingly. In any case delivery problem arises, the customer deserves to know. Online shops should first and foremost value their customer’s time above all. They shop online because they’re busy thus do not have the time in the world to go to shopping centres or their work schedule may not be enough to squish in everything.

So, to you Lazada, bugger off.

Movies..more movies

If you’re after quality movies/films I strongly recommend searching for Rooney Mara flicks or Victoria Vikander because they often star on sensible movies with good plot (mostly drama) or Eddie Redmayne, they're one of those notable actors and actresses. Like I said in my previous blog post, these actors are often found on award winning films. So, for now here are my flick picks. I kind of dig indie and drama right now.

Tanner Hall (2009)
Indie/Drama
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Rooney Mara as Fernanda ("Fern")
Georgia King as Victoria
Brie Larson as Kate
Amy Ferguson as Lucasta
Tom Everett Scott as Gio
Chris Kattan as Mr. George Middlewood

I though Tanner Hall at first is a person but I found out in the beginning of the movie that it is an all girls boarding school. Fern, Kate, Lucasta met at the boarding school and became friends.

Victoria, knew Fern when they were kids because they were neighbors and their mothers are friends as well. Fern saw Victoria let out her Grandmother’s pet bird from a cage when they were still small. Victoria is hostile to others because she grew up with an alcoholic mother. She later became jealous of Fern’s relationship.

Kate, Fern’s flirtatious friend often flirts around with Mr. Middlewood, a married teacher who’s wife also works at Tanner Hall. Mr. Middlewood though has hidden sexual desires for Kate.

Lucasta, she’s timid and the most inhibited among the three. She often hangs around with the pizza delivery boy. She’s the most creative though.

One day, Fern was allowed to get out of the school premise because of a dinner with her mother’s friend. Gio fetched Fern from the boarding school, he’s however the husband of Fern’s mother’s friend. Fern grew a special liking for Gio and inspite their age difference, Gio reciprocated Fern’s feelings. They made out at Gio’s house. Fern fell in love with Gio. I just don’t know if she got pregnant by the later because it was never revealed except she was vomiting during Gio’s son’s christening.

Moving on, Victoria made a ploy which is to destroy Fern’s secret relationship with Gio but when Fern stood up for her whilst her alcoholic mother is humiliating her (at the christening) in front of the guests she had a change of heart and decided not to push through with her evil plan.

Going back to Kate, he made it clear to Mr. Middlewood during her 18th birthday that she’s not interested. Mr. Middlewood left Tanner Hall. Kate felt sorry for him and realized the trouble she made so in the end he read all the books that Mr. Middlewood recommended during class.

Fern and Victoria became friends. I like this line uttered by Fern “Two negatives became positive” or something like that. The movie is about discovering adulthood.

Overall, Tanner Hall is a nice flick as it tells about the importance of support system, the value of friendship to compensate for the lack of nurture, love and respect from ones own family. It’s good that the movie pointed out that some parents blame their kids for being such a troublemaker without looking at their own shortcomings. That, we should also look at the B sides of every story, a parent shouldn’t go on telling everyone about how problematic they are with their teenage kids, they should also take into account the importance of support from families as a basic unit.  I seriously recommend this movie to be shown in schools, teenage kids will definitely relate to it and who knows might even pick up something good from watching this movie.

Dare (2009)
Indie/romantic film
⭐️⭐️

* Emmy Rossum as Alexa Walker
* Zach Gilford as Johnny Drake
* Ashley Springer as Ben Berger
* Rooney Mara as Courtney

This film is not really top-billed by Rooney, she’s pretty much one of the major casts.

Alexa has a perfect life. She’s rich and intelligent but she’s scared to explore, to be a regular teenage girl. She’s friends with Ben,   a geek, who I thought was Alexa’s boyfriend at first. Alexa had a major role at the school drama and was paired with bad boy Johnny.

A famous director/school alumni went to see the rehearsal noticed how bad Alexa’s acting was but praised Johnny for being a natural. Alexa thought she could learn every thing but was advised to pursue a different career path and not become an actress because she lacks emotions and must suck the marrow out of life first because in that way she might learn what being an actress is all about. The Director dared Alexa to do something she’s afraid of

Alexa took the 'dare' too heart. She asked helped from what seems to be her bohemian/ hippie friend Courtney to explore and come out of her comfort zone. At the party, Alexa made out with Johnny. Her newfound freedom helped her pull emotions for her character in their school drama/stage play.

Alexa on the other hand dared Ben to do something he’s afraid to do after Ben expressed frustration for Alexa's sudden change of behaviour. It’s a chain reaction  pretty much. Alexa, grounded by her parents for the crazy things she did was sent to Ben’s house (since they knew the two are BFFs) because her parents would be away. Johnny on the other hand went to Ben’s house and found that Courtney can look after Alexa so he instead decided to leave. Ben offered Johnny a ride home. Johnny found that Ben’s never been kissed yadda yadda, one thing led to another, the two made out not that Johnny is gay (although Ben is). Ben found that he’s gay which he never knew until then.

Ben told Alexa about what happened. Alexa kept an open mind although it turned pretty complex because they became both attracted to Johnny. I found that Johnny lives with his step mother because her biological mother is gone and that he feels alone most of the time thus he has a regular session with a shrink because he's going through some rough time.

The three parted ways after a threesome gone wrong at Courtney's party. Alexa went back to her geeky self and so as Ben. Alexa saw Johnny after a few years and found he’s an actor.

This movie was OK, not my kind of genre though. Nevertheless, I dare you to watch.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013)
Drama
⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • Casey Affleck as Bob Muldoon
  • Rooney Mara as  Ruth Guthrie
  • Ben Foster as Patrick Wheeler

This movie has a lot of ambiguity to it because first, the story started with Ruth walking away from Bob then later on the police starts firing shots at them so there’s a lot of non-diegetic stuff to it. It’s like we’re already halfway through the movie while it just started or something like that.

During Bob and Ruth’s encounter with the police, Ruth shot policeman Patrick. Bob took the credit for Ruth’s crime so he was imprisoned. I found that Ruth was pregnant to their daughter Sylvie that’s why Bob paid for Ruth’s crime. Ruth raised Sylvie alone. Patrick, started looking after Ruth and Sylvie not knowing it was Ruth who shot him. He told Ruth that Bob escaped prison. Ruth thought of leaving town with her daughter. Bob’s friend, however, covered for him after he escaped, allowed him to his house.

On the night of Sylvie’s 4th birthday, Patrick came to visit and gifted Sylvie a pretty dress and his guitar when he was a little boy. Bob drove off to visit Ruth and Sylvie but left soon when he saw Patrick. Patrick slept in Ruth’s house and heard a gunshot the next morning. He went to the police station together with Ruth and Sylvie to keep them safe.

I later on learned that Bob and Ruth might’ve robbed someone or a bank possibly because he stashed cash and buried them somewhere. People started chasing Bob and attempted to kill him. He was shot during one of his encounters with those guys he never knew.

After coming home from the police station, Ruth found Bob, badly shot at their house. He died later on while telling Ruth about the his dreams for the three of them.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints is quite dark and heavy. I felt Ruth’s pain and so as Bob. He was a good man however circumstances weren’t good to him though. He’s a father who dreamt of a better future and life for his family.

This film obviously did not aim for commercial success because it was a flop despite positive critic reviews. Nevertheless, cinema is not just for entertainment alone, it’s also an avenue for great writers, cinematographers etc. to showcase their wit.

Flick Picks

I have been rummaging the web for best movies of 2015 and way back. This is what I got, a couple of intelligible British films and of course the infamous Maleficent which I never got the chance to watch until recently. Nothing, I just feel like writing about different movie genres today. It’s kinda like hand picking from a handful of those sappy coloured M&Ms.

The Danish Girl (2015)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Setting: Mid 1920’s in Copenhagen, Denmark

Characters:
  • Lili Elbe/ Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne)- landscape artist, turned Einar to Lili; first known individual who underwent sex change
  • Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander)- Danish painter married to Einar
  • Hans Axgil (Matthias Schoenaerts) -Einar’s childhood pal
  • Henrik (Ben Whishaw)- Lili’s love interest
  • Dr. Kurt Warnekros (Sebastian Koch) - performed Lili’s sex change surgery

I’ll make this as brief as possible although the film is quite lengthy but I assure you it is interesting.

Gerda and Einer Wegener is been married for six years and they’re both artists. Gerda paints people whilst Einer (or Ei-nah as they pronounce it all throughout) paints landscapes.

One day after coming home to their flat, Gerda asked Einer if he could pose as a model for one of her unfinished portraits of a woman. In the painting, the womans leg isn’t finished yet so she asked her husband Einar to wear stockings, a shoe and dress. Einar, discreetly, seemed to have instant fascination with women’s clothing and everything (which I found a little peculiar considering they’ve been married for half a decade). Gerda, not knowing this rode along and even prepped Einar, as a woman for an exhibit she’ll be attending. Gerda’s friend called Einar Lili.

Einar now in Lili’s persona attracted the attention of art dealers and one of which was Henrik. He became attracted to Lili because he said Lili’s was ‘old fashioned.’

Einar and Gerda’s relationship went rocky because Einar disappeared and became Lili. Einar turned homosexual basically which was not socially accepted back then since it was during the 1920’s and people think differently during that era. The psychiatrists after series of examinations called him ‘pervert’ and many other psychological terms.

I admire Gerda for having an open-mind which I completely understand since she’s an artist. She supported Lili all the way through and even tracked down Einar’s childhood friend Hans for moral support. Hans also kept an open mind.

Lili and Gerda turned to Dr. Kurt Warnekros as he’s known for studying cases similar to Lili. Dr. Kurt Warnekros explained to them that Lili needs to undergo couple of major surgeries, first to remove the male organ and second for Lili to have a female organ. Whilst recovering, Lili decided to find a life of his own and told Gerda to do the same. Lili decided to work for a perfume company and enjoyed it, his co-workers knew he’s a she.

Lili/Einar though had gone so far and pushed his body’s limits. He/she or Lili (ok I’m getting confused now) asked Dr. Kurt Warnekros to push through with the second surgery (which is for him to have a female genital)even though he’s not fully recovered and his body is still quite weak. This decision eventually caused his death due to infection and blood loss.

Lili’s story or should I say ordeal may have been peculiar back then but all I can say is that being homosexual in my opinion is something people cannot hold up against as there might’ve been chemicals in our body causing it aside from the environment one is exposed to. It’s not at all times people may have wanted to be but if their body says otherwise who are we to resist right? I think it’s a chemical reaction in human body, I guess it’s the lack of testosterone or estrogen or whatever.

This film is really of good taste. The nudity and all did not bother me neither because they were done with class and the plot calls for it as well so no wonder why It gained so many positive reviews from film critics. I recommend this film but it’s PG18.

The Danish Girl is actually the first time I’ve seen Alicia Vikander, the second was with the movie Ex-Machina which I would be reviewing in a bit. I thought she’s a good actress because she just doesn’t care being stripped. I knew a lot of good actors/actress who need not strip to reap awards but there are so many good ones who wouldn’t care being nude because acting is an art form by itself. I also watched this film because I saw Eddie Redmayne is on it and I was impressed with his acting in The Theory of Everything, this dude is an impeccable actor.  He’s also done total frontal nudity in this film and he just wouldn’t care neither, it’s like the cinema is his huge stage.

Alright, moving on..another one on top of my list is this enigmatic film Ex-Machina.

Ex Machina (2015)
⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson)- A Programmer
  • Ava (Alicia Vikander) - a humanoid robot, has AI (Artificial Intelligence)
  • Nathan (Oscar Isaac) - CEO of his software company called Blue.

Alicia Vikander is becoming one of my favorite actress (or actor like what they call it nowadays) because she doesn’t just star in some shitty flick, just like Rooney Mara, you barely see her neither in not so interesting movie genres.

Caleb, a Programmer won a week long visit to Nathan’s home somewhere faraway. Nathan owns a software company and he sort of picked Caleb to give him his feedback and observations about his humanoid creation named Ava which has AI. Nathan’s home by the way is a luxurious hotel like facility in a secluded mountains of the unknown.

When Caleb saw Ava, he was drawn to her because she resembles a real human being except she’s way more genius. Ava has a face of a human but a body that’s half human, half robot.

One night while he’s fast asleep, he experienced a power outage which left him locked up in his room. This made caleb wonder what he has gotten himself into. His room does not have windows and when he switched on his in room TV, he saw that Nathan’s home is blanketed with cameras and he’s able to see Nathan’s whereabouts and so as Ava’s.

Ava, during one of the power outages told Caleb she’s the one causing the power outage and that every time that happens Nathan cannot see nor hear what the two of them is talking about since the cameras are also out. She pretty much made Caleb believe that Nathan is the villain and that they both need to escape from Nathan’s facility. Caleb made up a plan so both of them could escape, he asked Ava to cause another power outage while he programs all the computers so they everything work as planned.

Caleb seemed to have fallen under Ava’s spell didn’t realize that Nathan knew about their plan to escape because he can hear everything even if there’s a power outage. Nathan divulged that Ava made Caleb believe every word she said and little did he knew Ava is a rat on a leash, she outwit and used Caleb in order to escape. Caleb, already fell under Ava’s trap told Nathan that he already programmed everything and as soon as 10pm strikes all the entry points would open and Nathan will be locked inside his home once the power is out. Nathan pissed off punched Caleb after having lost control to his own home.

Fast forward, Ava and the other humanoid Kyoko connived and killed Nathan. Ava escaped, now fully dressed as a human after she scrapes other humanoid’s skin for her own use and left Caleb locked up in Nathan's facility.

The End.

It was SciFi (Science Fiction) so the terminologies they used in the Film is pretty  'out there.’ I mean, so much Science could cause nose bleeds lol. I wish I switched on the subtitles so I was able to understand it much better :D

Anyways, this movie is pretty cool even If I’ve seen tons of movies about AI and stuff. The Film's approach is kind of different because they infused SciFi with Psychological thriller which made it interesting. In most movies, Drama is paired with Psychological thriller but Ex-Machina twitched it a bit. This movie though is not for everyone because it has turned boring on some parts because of the jargons but nevertheless if you’re a fan of SciFi this may be for you. This flick also has a lot of women nudity because they’re humanoids, robots that are skin coated so what to expect right? Don’t worry the nudity is called for it’s just that it’s not really for kids, a lot of PG stuff.

Ok, Let me go to a different genre, let’s go for something GP (General Patronage), Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent. This movie was one of the top grossers back in 2014 and I can say it was pretty nice.

Maleficent (2014)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) - a powerful fairy from Moors
  • King Henry (Kenneth Cranham)- the King who wanted to conquer Moors.
  • Stefan (Sharlto Copley) - Maleficent’s love interest
  • Diaval (Sam Riley) - saved by Maleficent from being held captive by the King’s soldiers

Little fairy Maleficent lives in a magical forest called Moors, she loves her powerful and enormous wings. One day, the fairies were bothered and called Maleficent when little boy Stefan entered the enchanted forest. Maleficent asked Stefan to return back what he took from the forest, he eventually did and the two developed a special friendship. Maleficent learned that Stefan was poor and dreamt about living in the palace someday. Years passed, Maleficent grew into a beautiful young woman and her special friendship with Stefan remained.

One day again, King Henry invaded Moors hoping to conquer Maleficent’s enchanted forest because of avarice. Maleficent fought against the King and his army and she won of course since she’s very powerful herself. King Henry after having defeated by Maleficent longed to kill her.

Stefan worked as a soldier for the King but he became ambitious and yearned of becoming a King plotted against Maleficent. He drugged her and cut off her enormous wings as a proof (to the ailing King Henry) that, he indeed killed Maleficent. He was crowned the new King afterwards.

Maleficent was devasted when she woke up with her wings gone. She still has powers but she never felt complete after losing her wings. She saw this poor crow captured by men so she decided to use her magic by turning it into a man. The shape shifting crow became Diaval. To give thanks to Maleficent for saving his life, Diaval became her wings and spied on the now crowned King Stefan.

King Stefan married somebody else, had a child named Aurora. After Maleficent learned about the news, she went to the Palace and cursed (the still baby then) Princess Aurora, that she will fall asleep once pricked by a spindle wheel’s needle on her 16th birthday and only a true love’s kiss will wake her up. The three good fairies took off with Princess Aurora (with King Stefan’s blessing) for her to be protected from Maleficent which they later on called the bad fairy. Little did they knew, Maleficent has been looking after Princess Aurora along with Diaval all along.

Maleficent discreetly loved Aurora like a fairy Godmother because she’s not really evil, she was just broken hearted after what Stefan did to her. Nevertheless, she protected and kept Aurora away from harm. Maleficent decided to revoke her own curse towards Aurora but failed. Aurora learned about the curse because one of her fairy caretakers told her about it by accident. She also learned that Maleficent is the bad fairy they’re pertaining to who cursed her.

The curse still happened exactly on Aurora’s 16th birthday. The fairies thought a kiss from a Prince would free Aurora from the curse but that did not happen. Maleficent, saddened by what she did to Aurora kissed her cheeks thinking she will never wake up. Aurora woke up which means Maleficent loved Aurora all along. King Stefan, for some inexplicable reason still wanted to kill Maleficent. Aurora found Maleficent’s wings and freed them. Maleficent and her powerful wings reunited, King Stefan lost and died. Princess Aurora was crowned as Moors’ new queen (I think).

It was a happy ending because the movie is for kids, which means we can’t break their hearts. Seriously, it was a nice movie although it was a dark fantasy film the goodness still prevailed. Maleficent may have horns but she has a big heart. Well, from an adult’s point of view, the movie maybe for kids but it’s about oppression and abuse of power.

I’m done and out! I have tons of movies to watch and I will keep you guys posted.
